KUILSRIVER COMMUNITY CHURCH
(Uniting Presbyterian-Congregational )
KUILSRIVER COMMUNITY CHURCH
Brief History
Kuils River Community was started in the mid 1980’s as an offshoot of the Bellville Presbyterian Church. A few members of the BPC who lived in Kuils River, wanted to plant a church in their area as there was already a Sunday School running in a member's garage.
The first minister appointed to the church was Rev. Anthony Snell. The ministry started to flourish and grow, but sadly he was tragically killed in a car accident 7 months after his ordination.
Rev. David Gray followed him, and faithfully served the congregation for about 2 years, until he was called to Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in Durban.
Following this was a 5 year period where the church did not have a full time minister. We were more than ably led by one of the elders George MacDonald (Who later became a minster and served the Kraaifontein Presbyterian Church). The church was then led by another elder Basil Leonard up until a probationer minister was appointed in 1995.
Rev. Stephen Nicholson was appointed to our church as a probationer in March 1995. He was ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in February 1996 by the Presbyterian Church; and is currently still serving at our church.
We have a fairly small membership of about 120 and on average we have an attendance of 80 worshippers on Sundays. This allows for a relaxed and family orientated atmosphere; however it is our hearts desire in line with God’s plan to grow beyond this.
After many years of meeting in school staffrooms, classrooms and halls, we finally completed our first building in August 1997 on land kindly donated by the Spengler family. We extended to include our children’s ministry in 2001.
Through all of this Jesus has faithfully Blessed us, provided for us and guided us, and we seek to truly lift His name up and Glorify Him in our community and beyond.
Minister
Rev. Stephen Howard Nicholson studied at the University of Durban-Westville from 1988 – 1993.
He obtained his Masters Degree in Theology, focusing on the Holy Spirit in Systematic Theology. After spending his first probationer year in Scotland, he was placed at Kuils River for his second year, and God has kept Rev. Nicholson here ever since.
He is a dedicated Sharks supporter, but we do not hold that against him.
He is married to Andrea TaniaNicholson (Nee Gallant), a professional hockey coach; she is also one of the worship leaders.
They have been blessed with a young son named Sean.
They truly seek to hear God’s will and serve Him as they serve our community.
